Is a wider collar better for dogs?

A wider collar can be better for dogs in certain situations, especially considering comfort and safety.  Wider collars distribute pressure more evenly around a dog’s neck, reducing the risk of injury or discomfort.

If your dog meets some or all of these standards, then consider a wider collar:

  • If your dog is a larger breed
  • If your dog is sensitive to pressure on their neck or trachea
  • If your dog has respiratory issues
  • If your dog tends to play rough, pull, and can snap a smaller collar
  • If you want an alternative to a martingale collar

However, wider collars may not suit all dogs. A wide collar might be cumbersome or uncomfortable for small breeds or dogs with shorter necks. In these cases, a narrower, lightweight collar could be more appropriate.

What is a good width for a dog collar?

A dog collar for an extra small dog such as a Chihuahua, Jack Russell, Toy Poodle, or puppy most often measures 8 to 11 inches long to accommodate their necks. These collars are best in the 5/8 inch width to avoid the extra weight of a wider collar.

Medium-small breeds like the Beagle, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, and Pug may need longer collars ranging from 11 to 15 inches. These collars can be either 5/8 or 1 inch in width, depending on your and your dog’s needs.

If you’re looking for dog collars for German Shepherds, Springer Spaniels, English Bulldogs, and Dalmatians, these breeds’ neck sizes fall in the range of around 15 to 22 inches and are almost always a 1-inch width, though at times a 1.5-inch width can be used.

Wide dog collars, including 1.5” wide dog collars and 2” designs, are also great for large breeds such as Mastiffs, Great Danes, and Rottweilers. They are also good dog collars for Greyhounds.
