Choosing the right size collar for your puppy or dog doesn’t have to be difficult! Check out some frequently asked questions, learn how to measure your puppy or dog’s neck size, and determine the size of collar you need based on your dog’s breed with our dog collar size chart below.

Puppy Collar Size by Breed

The size of collar your puppy needs will depend on the breed and current size of your pet. For example, smaller breed puppies that weigh 10 pounds or less will probably need a collar with a length of 12 inches or less, whereas larger breed puppies that weigh 15 pounds or more will probably need a collar with a length of over 12 inches.

Toy Breed Dog Collars

Toy breed dogs are small dog breeds that weigh 15 pounds or less when fully grown—and they get their name because they resemble stuffed animals in size. Some examples of toy breed dogs include Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Toy Poodles, and Pugs—and the neck size of toy breeds typically ranges from 4 inches to 16 inches.

Dog Collars for Large Breeds

Large breeds are dogs that weigh 50 pounds or more when fully grown and have a height of around 24 inches or higher. Some examples of large breed dogs include Alaskan Malamutes, Boxers, Bull Terriers, Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies—and the neck size of large breeds typically ranges from 16 inches to 22 inches or more.

How Do I Know My Dog’s Collar Size?

Use flexible measuring tape and wrap it around your dog or puppy’s neck. However, be sure to not wrap it too tight; you want to measure where you want the collar to sit. In other words, don’t push deep into the fur, because you want to be able to fit two or three fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar.

If you do not have flexible measuring tape, you can use yarn, a piece of string, or some other flexible material instead and then use a ruler to determine the measurement. Another great way to determine the size you need is to measure a collar that already fits your dog or puppy.
